He famously said that he saw himself, not as a photographer, but as a ‘fotograficus’ (a ‘photo-graphic artist’). A graphic artist is in control of his technical means and exploits them to achieve his artistic ends, whereas a photographer is dependent on technology to communicate what he chooses to record as clear and truthfully as possible. This basic difference in approach is perhaps at the heart of Fieret’s unease with the photographic establishment: he wasn’t a photographer; at least, he felt he was one of a different kind.” W. V. S.
