Jeff Mermelstein – What if Jeff were a butterfly?
For many decades, Jeff Mermelstein has been chronicling life in New York, working with remarkable speed, humor, and precision, always noticing what slips past others. In this project, however, his gaze shifts inward. It begins with flowers — arguably one of the most frequently depicted subjects in photographic history, and for that very reason often approached with caution.
From this starting point, the work expands into a constellation of journal entries, family photographs, phone notes, and previously unseen prints, all emerging from a close engagement with Mermelstein’s personal archive and keepsakes. Taken together, these elements assemble a quiet study of attention: an exploration of how beauty reveals itself in ordinary moments and how meaning resides in the small details that shape a life.
